How to make it
6 steps. Take it one step at a time.
In a large skillet
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper until the beef is cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
8 minDrain off any excess fat from the skillet
Drain off any excess fat from the skillet. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
1 minAdd the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder
Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer
Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
15 minSpread butter on the cut sides of the hamburger buns
While the meat mixture is simmering, spread butter on the cut sides of the hamburger buns and toast them in a separate pan or in the oven until golden brown.
3 minSpoon the sloppy joe mixture
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve immediately.
A little kitchen wisdom
For a bit of extra kick, you can add a dash of hot sauce or diced jalapeños. If the sauce gets too thick while simmering, add a splash of water or beef broth.
