How to make it
5 steps. Take it one step at a time.
Place the fresh herbs
Place the fresh herbs (mint and lemon verbena) in a mortar and pestle. Bruise them lightly to release their essential oils and aroma.
Fill a large pitcher
Fill a large pitcher with the cold water, ice cubes, sliced lime, and the bruised herbs. Stir well and let it sit for 2-3 minutes to infuse.
3 minFill a 'guampa' about 2/3 full
Fill a 'guampa' (or a tall glass) about 2/3 full with yerba mate. Tilt the glass to one side so the yerba settles on a slope.
Place the 'bombilla'
Place the 'bombilla' (straw) into the lower side of the slope. Pour a small amount of the cold herbal water from the pitcher into that space and let it soak for a moment before filling completely.
Sip through the straw and refill
Sip through the straw and refill with more cold herbal water as needed until the flavor of the yerba mate is exhausted.
A little kitchen wisdom
Traditionally, Tereré is shared among friends using a single guampa (cup) and bombilla (straw). Use 'Yerba Mate para Tereré' which is usually more coarsely ground to prevent the straw from clogging.
