How to make it

6 steps. Take it one step at a time.

  1. Pour the sweetened condensed milk

Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the bottom of a heat-proof glass.

  2. Remove the top screen from the Phin filter

Remove the top screen from the Phin filter. Add the ground coffee and replace the screen, pressing down lightly. Do not press too hard or the water won't drip through.

  3. Place the Phin filter

Place the Phin filter over the glass. Pour a small amount (about 1-2 tbsp) of 205°F (96°C) water into the filter and wait 30 seconds to allow the coffee to bloom.

  4. Fill the Phin filter

Fill the Phin filter with the remaining boiling water, cover with the lid, and let the coffee drip slowly into the glass. This should take about 5 minutes.

  5. Remove the filter

Once the coffee has finished dripping, remove the filter. Stir the coffee and condensed milk together until well combined.

  6. Fill the glass with ice cubes

Fill the glass with ice cubes, stir again, and serve immediately.

A little kitchen wisdom

For the most authentic flavor, use Vietnamese coffee brands like Trung Nguyen or Cafe Du Monde (chicory blend). The Phin filter is essential for the slow drip process that creates the signature strong brew.
